X70.70 - Farmers Guardian

A lot of bang for your bucks…

That was Farmers Guardian’s conclusion when it put the six-cylinder McCormick X70.70 to the test on the front of a trailed forage harvester:

“It is in the field where the X70 comes into its own,” writes machinery reporter James Rickard. “Powering a JF 1100 forage harvester in heavy first cut conditions offered a true test of its power and agility.”

Its 6.7-litre BetaPower-badged FPT engine provided a smooth consistent supply of power, hardly ever budging from 2,000rpm, even when the rowing-up man got greedy.

Fuel consumption was also fairly impressive - consuming 12.8l/ha (5.2l/acre), which is 0.49l/ha (0.2l/acre) less than the 180hp tractor which usually resides at the front of this chopper. Factor in the cost of AdBlue at 33 pence per litre, and the McCormick is slightly cheaper to run - just.

“Overall, the X70 is a decent tractor. We really liked its comfort and power and it is certainly one of the easiest machines to operate - a true jump on and drive tractor.”
